Fenty Celebrates Newly Renovated Ontario Court Apartments
WASHINGTON, DC - April 27, 2009 - (RealEstateRama) — Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and Councilmember Jim Graham (Ward 1) joined public and private partners and local families in Adams Morgan for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the newly renovated Ontario Court Apartments, a 27-unit affordable housing complex that includes the new Jubilee JumpStart Early Childhood Development Center. The Mayor also highlighted the District’s contribution to funding the renovations and reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to ensuring access to safe, high-quality affordable housing.
“We don’t just talk about affordable housing—we provide funding to build it,” said Mayor Fenty. “We are proud to have contributed financially to the successful renovation of Ontario Court Apartments and excited for the families that will benefit from the Jubilee JumpStart Early Childhood Development Center.”
The $9.4 million renovation of the Ontario Court Apartments and the Jubilee JumpStart Early Childhood Development Center is the result of a public-private partnership comprised of the US Department of the Treasury, the District of Columbia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), Jubilee Housing, Inc., Jubilee JumpStart, PNC Bank and Enterprise Community Investment, Inc.
The District of Columbia was a major source of funding for renovations to the 27 affordable units in Ontario Court. The District Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), which facilitates the production and preservation of affordable housing, community, and economic development opportunities, contributed $3.5 million from DHCD’s Housing Production Trust Fund for improvements such as new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, new carpeting, upgraded kitchens and bathrooms, installation of new security systems, new air conditioning, and new laundry equipment.
Ontario Court Apartments is a three-story building that has housed low to moderate income residents and families in the District for 85 years. Purchased by Jubilee Housing, Inc. in 1980, the building features six one-bedroom units, 18 two-bedroom units and three units with three bedrooms all atop the newly created 4,000 square foot Jubilee JumpStart Early Childhood Development Center on the ground level. Jubilee JumpStart is the child care provider that operates the center, offering educational activities to approximately 50 children between the ages of six weeks and 5 years on a full day, night or weekend to accommodate parents with varying work schedules.
