Tale of growing up in Levittown, Long Island,
the most successful and daring real estate development in U.S. history

VANCOUVER, CN – August 15, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — Steve Bergsman, well-known real estate columnist and author, announced today that his fifth book, Growing Up Levittown: In a Time of Conformity, Controversy and Cultural Crisis, has hit the market and is available for sale at multiple E-Bookstore outlets including Amazon, Apple iBookstore, Smashwords and Kobo Books. After just a week in publication the book is already listed in Amazon Kindle’s best-selling list of the Top 100 History Books of the Twentieth Century.

Unlike his other books, including the Maverick Real Estate Investment set, this book is not focused on where to place your hard-earned dollars, but tells the tale of a singular place, Levittown, New York, perhaps, the most successful and daring real estate development in U.S. history.

“This book is part memoir and part social history of the development,” commented author Steve Bergsman. “I could have attacked the Levittown question through data and historical records, but I grew up there. I entered kindergarten in the Island Trees School District of Levittown and didn’t leave until after I graduated high school. So, I believed I had a unique perspective and could tell the story of the development through my own personal history.”

The building of Levittown, Long Island, in 1947, ushered in the advent of the suburban development. And, although, it was the prototype modern suburb, it was more reviled than appreciated during the first three decades of its existence.

Mr. Bergsman disagrees with the critics and writers who have pictured the suburbs as some kind of development hell, a boring environment that crushed people’s spirits. He thought Levittown was a wonderful place to have spent a childhood.

As it turned out, the intellectuals and the critics got it all so very wrong from the start. Not only wasn’t Levittown dullsville, but a surprising number of creative people passed through there, including songwriter Ellie Greenwich, singers Eddie Money and Billy Joel, Zippie The Pinhead cartoonist Bill Griffith, children’s book illustrator Jon Buller, radio host John Gambling, TV political commentator Bill O’Reilly, Maureen Tucker and Sterling Morrison of the Velvet Underground (the house band for Andy Warhol’s factory), and Steve Bergsman, journalist and author.

“When Levittown was built, the common assumption was that William Levitt was building a suburban slum,” added Mr. Bergsman. “The opposite happened. Levittown survived very nicely and today is a leafy suburb of tidy homes. A Levitt home that originally sold for less than $8,000 at the end of 1940s, probably would cost $350,000 for a buyer today.”

This book provides a nostalgic reminder of what life was like in America’s first mass produced suburb; for baby boomers, it’s a look back at a time of record hops and Elvis; for today’s generation, it’s an engaging account of life before cell phones and Facebook.

The book has only been released in ebook format and is available for purchase on Amazon on: Amazon.com, Amazon.com.uk, Amazon.de (all on Kindle), Apple’s iBookstore, Barnes and Noble (Nook- coming soon), Sony (coming soon), Kobo, Diesel, Scrollmotion (coming soon), Smashwords (in all Formats).
