KTGY Principal Ken Ryan to Participate in American Planning Association California Conference, Two Sessions

IRVINE, CALIF. – September 12, 2014 – (RealEstateRama) — Award-winning national firm KTGY Group, Inc., Architecture and Planning, is pleased to announce that Ken Ryan, Principal and head of KTGY’s Community Planning and Urban Design Studio, is participating in two sessions at the American Planning Association (APA), California Chapter Conference held September 13-16, 2014 at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, Calif. More than 1,000 planners and other planning professionals are expected to attend this annual conference on “California’s Adventures in Planning.” Ryan is a frequent speaker at various national and regional industry events.
On Sunday, September 14th, from 9:45 a.m. – 11:15 a.m., Ryan will serve as both the moderator and panelist at the session, “E Ticket Avoidance! How to Make Sure Your Community Participation Program is a Friendly Ride.” According to Ryan, this session will focus on how to plan for and implement a comprehensive community outreach program for development projects incorporating a variety of traditional and non-traditional outreach techniques. “Citizens and local residents are seeking increased involvement in community planning efforts. No longer content to sit on the sidelines, residents and neighbors are demanding input regarding local planning decisions. The intent of public outreach is to foster greater community participation, promote trusting relationships, and identify shared goals and values,” said Ryan.
Ryan, with Kris Olsen, Vice President of Campus Planning and Operations with Chapman University, a nationally-recognized liberal arts college located in historic Old Towne Orange, Calif., and Gary Lawrence, PhD. of Lawrence Research, a public opinion pollster based in Santa Ana, Calif., will discuss the comprehensive visioning outreach program that was developed for Chapman University. The panelists will also talk about helpful methods to secure meaningful community input, while keeping meetings on track. A variety of outreach techniques will be addressed including the use of Turning Point technology to take instantaneous polls of participants.
“At a time when a strategic outreach approach is more important than ever, we look forward to sharing lessons learned from the comprehensive Chapman University experience. Our focus will be on new development in a historic district and how a thorough understanding of the community has been a critical component of consensus building,” Ryan said.
On Monday, September 15th, from 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., Ryan will serve as both the moderator and panelist at the session, “All Aboard! Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center: From Vision to Reality.” This session will feature speakers involved in the planning, design and implementation of innovative transportation districts, including the world-class transportation center, Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC) in Anaheim, a LEED Platinum facility opening in December 2014. ARTIC will serve as the panel’s case study showcasing multi-modal transportation centers designed to accommodate current modes of transportation such as bus, rail and shuttle connections, as well as meet California’s projected future transportation needs in plans for high speed rail. Joining Ryan will be panelists Natalie Meeks, Public Works Director with the City of Anaheim; and Albert Kaneshiro, AIA, LEED AP, and Vice President from HOK’s Culver City office.

Known for leadership, strategic insight, creative thinking and communication skills, Ryan has 30+ years of experience in complex, high-profile projects, and has served on local and regional boards as a Public Official, including two-term past Mayor of the City of Yorba Linda and Chairman of the Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor Agency. KTGY serves as the urban design advisor to the City of Anaheim and prepared the Master Plan and the Mixed-Use District Conceptual Development Guidelines for ARTIC. KTGY also serves as the University of Chapman’s Community Planner overseeing numerous projects, community outreach, project strategy, vision and coordination to help build community support for entitlement approvals.
