Norton Says Passage of Clean DHS Appropriations Bill Today Ensures Full Funding for Most Important Building at St. Elizabeths DHS Campus

WASHINGTON, D.C. – March 4, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today said that today’s passage of a clean fiscal year 2015 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Appropriations bill ensures the additional $48.6 million needed for DHS to move into the Center building complex at the DHS campus at St. Elizabeths in Ward 8. The Center building will house the DHS secretary and top DHS officials, and a contractor already has been working on the building. The fiscal year 2015 omnibus appropriations bill, passed in December, included $144 million for DHS consolidation at St. Elizabeths. Norton has secured $1.7 billion for the DHS complex, including nearly $1.4 billion in stimulus funds for the complex’s first building, the Coast Guard headquarters, which was completed on time and on budget.

“For the sake of our national security and our federal employees, I am relieved the House finally came to its senses and funded DHS through the remainder of the fiscal year,” said Norton. “For us in the District of Columbia, there was a special bonus—the funding we have needed for the most important federal construction project in the country and certainly in this city.”

If DHS had shutdown, 30,000 employees nationwide would have been furloughed and 240,000 employees would have been forced to work without pay until a shutdown ended. DHS also would have stopped hiring and training programs. Grants for state and local governments, including Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster assistance grants and law enforcement grants, would have come to a halt.
