Mayor in Houston for Rose Center for Public Leadership and Urban Land Institute expertise on Hazelwood redevelopment, and presentation on city technology innovations

PITTSBURGH, PA – May 13, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Mayor William Peduto is in Houston today for the Rose Center for Public Leadership retreat and Urban Land Institute spring meeting.

The Mayor was selected in November as a 2015 Rose Center Fellow, which affords Pittsburgh guidance on land use challenges from a team of national design experts. In February a team of Rose Center officials visited Hazelwood and forwarded recommendations for the use of the Almono site.

Mayor Peduto is leading the Pittsburgh team of fellows, which also includes City Planning Director Ray Gastil; Karen Abrams, manager of community and diversity affairs, Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh; and Presley Gillespie, president of Neighborhood Allies.

Today, the Mayor will speak to the meeting on how cities are using technology innovations in the context of urban development. He will join other mayors at the presentation from Kansas City, Omaha and Seattle. Last week the Mayor spoke at the White House with Chief Innovation & Performance Officer Debra Lam and officials from Carnegie Mellon University on city-university collaborations on technology. There, he was joined by Chicago, South Bend and New York City government officials.

ULI oversees the Rose Center fellowships in conjunction with the National League of Cities. The Daniel Rose Center Fellowship program is the flagship program of the Rose Center, established in 2008 with a grant from ULI Foundation Governor Daniel Rose to encourage and support excellence in land use decision making by local governments.

The Rose Center seeks to foster creative, efficient, practical and sustainable land use policies by providing public officials with access to information, best practices, peer networks and other resources. The Fellowship’s program of work includes a study tour of another U.S. or foreign city, a working retreat, and study visits to each of the four fellowship cities.

ULI is covering expenses for the trip. The Mayor returns tomorrow.
