Norton to Commend Blue Plains for Leading Way on Addressing Climate Change and Clean Water at Dedication of Sustainable Recycling Project, Today
WASHINGTON, D.C. – October 7, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will speak at a ribbon cutting ceremony today, Wednesday, October 7, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., at Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant (5000 Overlook Avenue SW), at which the DC Water and Sewage Authority (DC Water) will dedicate its latest green project, the DC Water Digester Project, which is the first thermal hydrolysis facility in North America and the largest in the world.
“Blue Plains’ new sustainable recycling project is a forward-looking breakthrough that puts the District in the forefront of green water treatment projects,” said Norton. “Turning sewage and other waste into power will save money and reduce Blue Plains’ carbon footprint. In a city intersected by water and booming with ongoing development projects, it is important to know that DC Water is using the most advanced technologies to ensure that Blue Plains continues to improve ways for D.C. residents to enjoy safe water and clean energy.”
The project, which is an addition to the Blue Plains facility, includes new concrete digesters and thermal hydrolysis vessels, and new water cleaning technologies designed to meet one third of DC Water’s energy demands. The new process will also create Class A biosolids, soil which can be used in area community gardens and D.C. government public works projects. Norton is particularly pleased to witness the unveiling of the projects, as last year she succeeded in getting $14 million in federal funding for DC Water’s ongoing work.
