Washington, D.C. – January 6, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Higher education students will receive 50 percent discount to support future sustainability careersWashington, D.C. – (Jan. 5, 2015) – Today, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced for the first time that students will be able to take the LEED Green Associate exam for a reduced fee of $100. The regular exam price is $200 for USGBC members and $250 for non-members.

“As the need for STEM-centric professionals with proven experience and expertise grows, USGBC hopes to empower young professionals to take their studies to the next level and be well equipped to successfully move forward in the green building industry,” said Jaime Van Mourik, director of Higher Education at USGBC.

Students pursuing degrees in architecture, construction management, design, engineering, environmental sciences, natural resources management, and more, will find the credential helpful as they venture into the working world. LEED Green Associates have a documented, up-to-date understanding of the most current green building principles and practices. The credential’s only eligibility requirement is for individuals to be at least 18 years old.

“USGBC is committed to supporting the next generation of emerging sustainability professionals and expanding the reach of the green building movement,” says Van Mourik. “We understand the struggles many students face with debt, the unpredictable job market and cost of living once they graduate. By making the test more affordable, we hope students can focus on what matters – dreaming big and achieving the next major milestones in the sustainability industry and beyond.”

According to USGBC’s 2015 Green Building Economic Impact Study conducted by Booz Allen Hamilton, the green construction sector is outpacing overall construction growth in the U.S. and will account for more than 3.3 million U.S. jobs by 2018. As the industry continues to grow, the potential for job security, advancement and professional fulfillment for graduates is significant.

Colleges and universities are preparing students for industry growth through classes like LEED Lab, a multidisciplinary immersion course that utilizes the built environment to educate and prepare students to become green building leaders and sustainability-focused citizens. By engaging students in coursework that is directly related to LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design), the most widely used green building rating system in the world, and preparing for the LEED credentials, students are better equipped to take the Green Associate exam.

In addition to LEED Lab, USGBC works with students to transform their campuses, communities and careers through USGBC Students. USGBC Students provides a way for hundreds of young leaders to come together and participate in hands-on green building experiences on their own campuses. USGBC helps students integrate sustainability themes into their coursework, advocates for sustainable university practices and policies, and facilitates student attendance at green building conferences, events and collaborations with other student organizations, campaigns and initiatives.

Students who complete the LEED Green Associate exam will join more than 38,000 credentialed professionals. To receive the new student pricing, students must confirm enrollment at a post-secondary institution and provide their graduation date.
