Rep. Bass Statement on Dakota Access Pipeline Plans

WASHINGTON, D.C. – (RealEstateRama) — On Wednesday, Rep. Karen Bass released the following statement on the Dakota Access Pipeline:

“I strongly support the thousands of Standing Rock Sioux tribe and Native American activists at the Standing Rock water protector camps who have vowed to remain steadfast in their protests to halt construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline and secure their only source of clean water, and sacred burial grounds.

“The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is a sovereign nation that pre-existed the establishment of the United states. Indian nations, by law, govern themselves, their land, and their people. These nations have an obligation to protect the safety and welfare of its citizens and deserve the opportunity to do so.

“I am grateful for President Obama’s temporary stop on the building of the pipeline. He has shown his commitment to putting the rights and safety of citizens ahead of corporate greed, but the work is not done. There is still the very real threat that our President-Elect can reverse this victory. Trump, who supports of the completion of the pipeline can completely undo the progress that’s been made. And the Republican-led Congress could vote to allow Energy Transfer Partners to drill under the Missouri River by passing an appropriations rider.

“I urge the folks at Standing rock to continue to resist and make it clear to our President-elect that, if he is serious about being a President for “all Americans”, he should support the fundamental human right to access to clean water, and respect the sacred lands and sovereignty of the Standing Rock Sioux.”
