AGC EDUCATION AND RESEARCH FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 2011 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
100 Construction and Civil Engineering Students Each Receive a $2,500 Scholarship
ARLINGTON, VA – August 26, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — The AGC Education and Research Foundation (AGCERF) announced that 100 Construction and Civil Engineering students from across the nation received $2,500 scholarships to pursue their construction careers.
Students were evaluated on their academic standing, but just as important to the Foundation are such things as involvement in student chapters of the Associated General Contractors and summer and part-time work during the school year for construction firms. Students receive $2,500 scholarships, renewable for up to three years pending successful completion of the current academic year. The scholarship application process for the 2012-13 school year has begun. Applications are available online at http://scholarship.agc.org/.
“The Foundation is looking for students who are not only smart, but committed enough to get practical experience and knowledge about the issues and technology that are driving the construction industry,” said Thomas J. Burleson of Burleson Construction of Johnson City, Tenn., President of the AGCERF Board of Directors.
The Foundation has awarded over $8 million in scholarships since 1970. In addition to the scholarships, the Foundation gives an award each year to the winner of the James L. Allhands Essay Competition, in which college seniors submit essays on a topic relevant to the construction industry. This year’s winner was Andrew Talarek of Purdue University, for his essay, “Initiating a Culture of Lean Construction within the Firm.” The Foundation also honors an Outstanding Educator, chosen from the ranks of construction educators nationwide. This year’s honoree was Ken Robson, full-time professor and director of the Construction Science Division of the University of Oklahoma, where he has taught for 16 years.
The AGC Foundation was founded by members of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), the leading association for the construction industry that represents more than 33,000 firms, including 7,500 of America’s leading general contractors, and over 12,500 specialty-contracting firms. Scholarships are funded through donations and endowments made by AGC members.
