CHICAGO – RealEstateRama – The Appraisal Institute, the nation’s largest professional association of real estate appraisers, today announced that the organization will seek in 2020 to expand its leadership of the valuation profession and to enhance its reputation among stakeholders.

The Appraisal Institute will focus on expanding its leadership of the profession in three primary ways:

  • continuing to be highly effective in its advocacy on behalf of all appraisers;
  • seeking to increase diversity and inclusion in the organization and throughout the valuation profession; and
  • expanding the Appraisal Institute’s world-renowned body of knowledge.

“In response to important issues, the Appraisal Institute will maintain its role as the primary advocate for appraisers with state and federal legislative and regulatory bodies and other policymakers,” said 2020 Appraisal Institute President Jefferson L. Sherman, MAI, AI-GRS. “In that role, we will continue seeking to streamline excessive regulatory burdens that threaten to overwhelm appraisers and constrain their ability to conduct their business.”

Sherman noted that the Appraisal Institute supports the establishment of a national portal for appraiser licensing, which would streamline time and expense for appraisers, without infringing on state’s rights.

To help increase diversity and inclusion, the Appraisal Institute is partnering with Fannie Mae in their Appraiser Diversity Pipeline Initiative, which AI co-leads with Altisource and the National Urban League.

“2020 will mark the first full year of the Appraisal Institute’s Women’s Initiative Committee, whose mission is to foster the growth of women in the valuation profession,” Sherman said. He also noted that the Appraisal Institute is among 29 real estate organizations who have created the Careers Building Communities website, which is aimed at attracting the next generation of real estate professionals.

To expand its body of knowledge, Sherman said the Appraisal Institute will continue to publish textbooks in 2020, including the 15th edition of the world’s most recognized valuation textbook, “The Appraisal of Real Estate,” along with unveiling new education on topics important to appraisers, and offering other guidance, such as guide notes.
