BPC’s Grumet: Efforts to Streamline Infrastructure Permitting Processes is Critical for Private Investment

-

WASHINGTON, D.C. – September 23, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The Bipartisan Policy Center applauds legislative and executive branch efforts to improve the permitting process for infrastructure projects. “For years, this conversation has been stuck in polarized gridlock. Our nation is in desperate need of increased infrastructure investments. It is encouraging to see an array of efforts to move beyond political posturing and address this complex challenge,” BPC President Jason Grumet said.

Grumet highlighted the efforts at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue, giving a nod to the White House for releasing a package of new initiatives today aimed at speeding up federal review of infrastructure projects.

“Streamlining and speeding up the infrastructure permitting and review processes is critical to attracting more private investments in infrastructure projects. The current process is uncertain, inefficient, and undermines our economic growth.

“BPC commends Senators Rob Portman and Claire McCaskill for gaining strong bipartisan support for the Federal Permitting Improvement Act. This legislation would create a more efficient permitting process while ensuring effective environmental reviews.

“Later this week, the House of Representatives will vote on–the RAPID Act – which would also expedite federal permit approval. There are significant differences that must be resolved between the administration and Congress on these issues. The time is now to act. We need policymakers to come together around a package of reforms that balance the imperative for a more certain, timely and efficient process with the obligation to conduct sound environmental planning that protects our natural resources and public health.
