WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 6, 2014 – (RealEstateRama) — Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) today named Lloyd Evans, hiring and training administrator at Watson Electrical Construction Co. in Wilson, N.C. its Craft Instructor of the Year. Evans received the honor May 2 during ABC’s National Craft Championships (NCC) and Workforce Development Conference in Birmingham, Ala.

“Lloyd’s willingness to go above and beyond to help anyone who desires to learn has earned him this award and we are honored to recognize him,” said 2014 ABC National Chairman Dan Brodbeck, president and CEO of Compass Partners, LLC, Brentwood, Tenn. “Lloyd’s knowledge and experience serve as a tremendous asset to his students, ABC and to the construction industry as a whole.”

Evans, a Vietnam Veteran, began his career in construction as an electrical helper for Watson Electrical Construction in 1968 following three years of military service. He has since worked his way up as a foreman, supervisor, office and division manager and has now been in his current position for 10 years. His students appreciate his hands-on techniques and easy-to-understand comparisons for complicated subjects.

His skill as an instructor was further demonstrated at NCC last week where one his students, Shaun Birch of Raleigh, N.C., won the gold medal in the Electrical: Residential-Commercial competition. Birch beat out 14 other electrical trainees from 10 states to take home the gold medal.

Evans is also a NCCER Master Trainer and NCCER Sponsor Representative for both Watson Electrical Construction and at Wilson Community College. He participates in career fairs throughout North Carolina to help educate high school students about the benefits of a career in the electrical industry and works closely with military veterans to educate them on opportunities with his company and the electrical industry as a whole when they leave the service.

Each year, ABC presents the Craft Instructor of the Year Award to an instructor who possesses outstanding creativity, a positive attitude, and the ability to transfer knowledge through communications skills and innovative teaching to promote lifelong learning to our future workforce. The recipient of this national award best embodies the merit shop ideals through superior effort and talent.

As the 2014 Craft Instructor of the Year, Evans received a cash prize from the Trimmer Construction Education Foundation, a trophy, and a tablet and leather jacket from NCCER.
