Historic Sausalito Property Sells Well Over Listed Price

San Francisco, CA – June 26, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — Tanglewood, an extraordinary property in Sausalito, recently sold for well over its asking price of $2.9 million. Zephyr Real Estate Agent, Lily Remoundos, represented the purchaser in the transaction.

Tanglewood, located on Harrison Avenue, was built in 1873 when the gentry of San Francisco were purchasing summer homes in the fledgling township of Sausalito. The British Colonial home sits on one of the largest parcels in the area and includes extensive grounds. It was donated to the University of California in 1992 because of the considerable botanical gardens, which include old-growth oaks as well as exotic trees and shrubs from Asia and South America, some of which date back to the original landscaping in the 19th century.

Tanglewood affords stunning views of the Bay, San Francisco, and Angel Island. The prominent verandas, rambling walking trails and sprawling greens and patio areas all contribute to the secluded privacy and dignified lifestyle of this prominent home.

The property remained through generations in the original family of William Tillinghast until it was sold in the 1950s. The family held out for a buyer who would keep the original home and property intact, and it was a private sale to an important Bay Area architect, W. Steven Allen, founder of Anshen & Allen. It was Allen’s wife who was involved with the UCB Botanical Gardens and Gardener’s Guild.

The Allens resided at Tanglewood and willed it to the University of California for 20 years, in 1992, to be used as a botanical preserve. After the 20-year term the property was to be sold with proceeds to benefit the School of Architecture and Environmental Planning at UCB, courtesy of Allen and his wife. This marks the first time the property has been on the open market.

The modestly-sized home’s exterior is rather unique to the Bay Area. The home is modestly sized. Some of the upgrades, done by UC, were institutional, and not conforming to the style or size of the home. The new homeowner’s love and appreciation of the property include their vision to modernize and restore the interiors to it former grace and elegance.
