House Passes Legislation to Aid Veterans Service Organizations

Washington, DC – July 9, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — Congressman Beto O’Rourke (TX-16) released the following statement today after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1171, the FOR VETS Act of 2013, legislation that would amend federal law to allow veterans service organizations (VSO’s) to receive donations from the Federal Surplus Personal Property Donation Program free of charge. Congressman O’Rourke helped introduce the legislation and was one of three original co-sponsors.

“Our veterans service organizations do some of the most important work on behalf of the veterans in our community, often with limited resources,” said Congressman O’Rourke. “This cost-effective legislation will help them provide better services to the brave men and women who have served our country by allowing them to tap into additional resources. I look forward to working with the VSO’s in our district to ensure that they utilize this new resource, and all other resources at their disposal, to help the veterans in our district.”

Under current law, VSO’s have to prove that they are involved in education or health programs to obtain a property donation at no cost. The FOR VETS Act of 2013 would expand no-cost eligibility to any organization that primarily supports veterans.

The Federal Surplus Personal Property Donation Program distributes personal property that the federal government no longer needs to eligible state and local government agencies and non-profit organizations.
