How Often Should You Wash The Curtains?

National -

There are hardly any homes that do not have curtains or blinds. They are required for keeping the rooms clean and cool. They help in filtering ultraviolet rays and heat emanating from the harsh summers in Singapore. While the curtain in your home does the silent role of a good Samaritan, it does attract quite a bit of dirt and grime when it does its work. It is therefore important for you to ensure that the curtains are cleaned on a regular basis.

The question that comes to our mind is what regular washing is all about. The very thought of washing your curtains is quite painful, especially during weekends. Many of us would love to spend the weekends perhaps in a more productive way. But there is no denying the fact that curtains require maintenance and upkeep and it all starts with regular cleaning. Let us try and get a feel as to the periodicity with which these curtains should be washed and cleaned.

Why Should They Be Washed Regularly?

As mentioned above, curtains are exposed to the elements of nature and also to dirt and grime. Hence, they tend to become stained and ugly looking over a period of time. They also start attracting molds and dust mites. These could cause allergy-related problems and other such issues. Many people suffer from respiratory problems and also skin-related issues. Hence, whether we like it or not, there is no doubt that one needs to give the right kind of attention to cleaning or curtains on a regular basis.

What Should Be The Frequency?

The frequency of curtain cleaning would depend on the area in which the house is located. It would be too difficult to generalize the cleaning and washing routine. Straight jacketing the same would be tough and therefore, it would not be a bad idea to lay down some guidelines when it comes to choosing the right time period for washing curtains.

Do you live in a dusty area: Though Singapore, by and large, is a neat city, there are some places where it is dirty and grime floating around. If you are, therefore, staying in such a place, it would make a lot of sense to clean the curtains once in three to six months. By cleaning, we mean totally removing the curtains from the windows and wet-cleaning it in the washing machine. In the interim, it would be a good idea to vacuum clean the curtains without removing them from their fixed places. This will help it to remain relatively free from mold, mildew and other microorganisms. The curtains will also remain free from dust and other impurities.

Do You Have Members Who Are Hypoallergenic?

If you have members who are hypoallergenic, then it is important that the curtains should be cleaned every two to three months. Though vacuuming might be good enough to remove most allergens, it is better to clean it using the conventional washing machines or send it across for dry cleaning. This will ensure removal of allergens that are deeply embedded or those that might not get removed even by heavy vacuuming.

Are You Living Near The Sea?

Singapore is an island-city and therefore many homes are located not too far away from the sea. It is therefore quite possible that the fixtures and fittings in the homes could be prone to corrosion and rusting. The curtains of your home could also be open to the risk of staining and accumulation of salt-dusts and other such impurities. It would, therefore, be advisable to clean your curtains at least once in a quarter. It would be advisable to use special cleaning methods and ingredients that could help in removing elements that could corrode or damage the curtains.

A Few More Things To Keep In Mind

While the above would give a reasonably good idea about the frequency of cleaning of curtains, there are a few more things that one should keep in mind. Doing simple things like vacuuming, brushing the curtains and dusting it on a weekly basis could help quite a bit in keeping the fixtures and fittings quite clean. In fine, you have to decide on the frequency of cleaning the curtains. It will not only keep them clean but will also protect your families from various hypoallergenic health conditions. The durability and lifespan of the curtains will also increase quite significantly.
