Landmark housing stimulus legislation was signed into law yesterday by President Bush in an effort to end the current housing downturn, aid home buyers and struggling borrowers and strengthen the housing finance system. The Housing and Economic Recovery Act (H.R. 3221) is expected to jump-start the housing industry through a tax credit for first-time home buyers as well as much-needed measures that will improve mortgage liquidity, foster refinancing of troubled loans and expand the supply of affordable rental housing.

NAHB will host a media teleconference on August 4, to explain the provisions of the new housing legislation and how it benefits consumers and the housing industry.

NAHB President Sandy Dunn will open the call with an overview of the legislation. NAHB economist and tax expert Rob Dietz will explain details on how the tax credit works. Illinois builder Ed Brady will discuss how the legislation will help first-time home buyers, and Pulte Homes President and CEO Richard Dugas will offer a high production builder’s perspective on the benefits of the credit.

NAHB will also highlight its newly launched consumer Web site www.federalhousingtaxcredit.com that includes details and a set of comprehensive questions and answers about how the credit works and how consumers can take advantage of it.

Members of the media will be given the opportunity to ask questions at the conclusion of the call.
