WASHINGTON, D.C. – April 10, 2014 – (RealEstateRama) — Natural yard care is a win-win opportunity, especially for homeowners. They get a less expensive, lower maintenance and safer yard. They also get the satisfaction of knowing that their yard is less harmful to aquatic life and provides needed habitat for native wildlife such as birds and butterflies. Two 2-hour evening workshops at the Tacoma Nature Center will help homeowners put natural yard care into practice.

At the “Landscape Design Made Easy”workshop on Monday, April 28, attendees will learn how to select plants that grow well in the Northwest and their yard’s sunlight, soil and water conditions. Instructor Bonne Holbrook is a life-long plant lover, Pierce County Master Gardener, Native Plant Steward and a docent at Chase Garden, where she specializes in plant propagation.

A few days later, at the “Right Plant for the Right Place” workshop attendees will learn landscape tips to add beauty, interest and value to their yards. On Friday, May 2, instructor Dana Kelley Bressette will share how to use plant choice to reduce how much time and money attendees spend on yard work. Bressette has a master’s degree in Urban Horticulture from the University of Washington that she’s put to use at the Point Defiance Greenhouses, the W.W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory, professional nurseries, online Native Plant Encyclopedia and her own environmental gardening website. As a bonus, attendees will also be allowed to pre-select plants for purchase at the Tacoma Nature Center’s Spring Native Plant Sale being held the next day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 3.

Both workshops run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per person and preregistration is requested. To register, call (253) 591-6439 or visit TacomaNatureCenter.org.
