A Statement from Alliance to Save Energy President Kateri Callahan

Washington, D.C. – February 10, 2016 – (RealEstateRama) — “President Obama’s last budget continues the solid and stalwart support for investing in a clean and efficient energy future that we have seen throughout his administration. The administration’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2017 once again calls for significant increases in funding for energy efficiency and new initiatives that will improve our energy productivity and increase the competitiveness of our economy. In particular, the Alliance applauds the decision to double budgetary support of clean energy programs, increasing to $12.8 billion in 2021, up from $6.4 billion in 2016, as part of the Mission Innovation initiative announced by Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz in Paris last year. The United States’ quick and decisive action will spur the other 19 countries in the initiative to follow suit and honor their own commitments to double investment in innovation.

“The Alliance to Save Energy also commends the administration’s budgetary emphasis on accelerated funding for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), providing $2.9 billion in FY 2017, which contributes to Mission Innovation. With 28 percent of EERE’s funding allocated for energy efficiency and advanced manufacturing activities, the Alliance to Save Energy is pleased with the administration’s recognition of efficiency’s value in providing benefits for our economy, the environment and energy security. Additionally, the budget allocates $500 million for the Advanced Research Projects Agency—Energy (ARPA-E), – a move that will spur innovation in energy-efficient technologies while improving the energy security of the United States and saving American tax dollars to boot.

“These budget increases comport directly with the Alliance to Save Energy’s long-standing calls to double federal funding for energy efficiency, and follow the recommendations that the Alliance, DOE and other partners have made via the Accelerate Energy Productivity 2030 initiative to increase investment in efficiency.

“The Alliance calls on the Congress to respond favorably to the administration’s recommendations for funding programs that will drive energy-efficient technologies and practices into our economy that will underpin increases in energy productivity that are necessary to keep our economy growing and globally competitive.”
