U.S. Solar Market on Track for a Record-Breaking Year

In the first quarter of 2016, 1,665 megawatts (MW) of solar PV were installed in the United States with the solar industry adding more new capacity during this period than coal, natural gas and nuclear combined. According to GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association’s (SEIA) U.S. Solar Market Insight, Q2 2016, the 1,665 MW accounted for 64 percent of all new electric generating capacity brought on-line in the first quarter of the year.

Mortgage applications increased 9.3 percent from one week earlier, according to data from the Mortgage Bankers Association's (MBA) Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey for the week ending June 3, 2016. This week's results include an adjustment to account for the Memorial Day holiday.

DOL-VETS Announces $36 Million in HVRP Grant Awards

U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez announced the award of $36 million inHomeless Veterans' Reintegration Program grants on Wednesday, June 1, at the NCHV Annual Conference. The grants will help an estimated 17,000 veterans successfully transition to sustainable housing and good civilian jobs. The grants will fund a variety of services to assist homeless veterans in their return to the labor force including occupational, classroom and on-the-job training, as well as job search and placement assistance.

HUD Proposes Broadband Infrastructure Requirement for Multifamily Housing

HUD published a proposed rule on May 18, Narrowing the Digital Divide Through Installation of Broadband Infrastructure in HUD-Funded New Construction and Substantial Rehabilitation of Multifamily Rental Housingthat would require owners and developers of HUD-funded multifamily housing to install broadband infrastructure at the time of construction or if the property undergoes substantial rehabilitation.

HUD Seeks to Amend ConPlan Regulations to Address the Digital Divide and Climate Change

On May 18, HUD published a proposed rule, Modernizing HUD’s Consolidated Planning Process to Narrow the Digital Divide and Increase Resilience to Natural Hazards, that would require jurisdictions to consider broadband access and resilience to natural hazard risks, including hazards that may result from climate change, in their Consolidated Plans (ConPlan).

39 Affordable Homes for Seniors to Open in Revere Thursday

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will officially open One Beach, a new affordable housing building in Revere, developed by The Neighborhood Developers. The four-story building includes 39 affordable rental apartments, with a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments. Building amenities include a community room featuring a kitchen, library, public computers, and television for gatherings, as well as a fitness room, onsite parking and laundry, an outdoor courtyard, and central air-conditioning.

Civil Engineer Joins National Institute of Building Sciences Team

The National Institute of Building Sciences has added a civil engineer to its employee roster. JiQiu (JQ) Yuan, PhD, PE, comes on board as a project manager. He will be supporting activities of both the Building Seismic Safety Council and Multihazard Mitigation Council.
