(WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 26, 2017) –- (RealEstateRama) — The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International will offer attendees of the upcoming 2017 BOMA International Annual Conference & Expo an in-depth look at the sustainable best practices and technology trends driving the commercial real estate industry.

This year’s conference, which takes place June 24-27 in Nashville, Tennessee, will demonstrate how sustainability has become embedded into how the industry operates. The Monday General Session will feature the much-anticipated announcement of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s list of top U.S. cities with the most ENERGY STAR®-certified buildings. First released in 2009, this list reveals which cities are prioritizing energy management and offers an important indicator for national sustainability growth trends. Attendees will get the first look at whether their hometowns made the cut.

On the technology side of things, Monday’s General Session also will feature, “Technology Disruptors: Keeping Up with Market Transformation,” a panel discussion with top industry experts on how evolving technologies are changing the industry in new and profound ways. Smart building technology and the evolving nature of the workplace are creating new expectations for office building operations and management. Panelists will provide insight into how property professionals can meet these challenges and opportunities head-on. The panel will be moderated by Ian Khan, futurist and author of several books, including The Internet of Things & the Future of Innovation: How IoT Powered by Cloud Computing Is Changing Everything We Know About Technology. Panelists will include:

  • Tommy Russo, Chief Technology Officer, Akridge (Washington, D.C.)
  • Steve Weikal, Head of Industry Relations, MIT Center for Real Estate (Boston)
  • James Whalen, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Boston Properties (Boston)

Conference attendees will gain a more in-depth picture of trends in sustainability and technology through the conference education sessions, which will cover everything from occupant health and wellness to cybersecurity to leveraging new technology in an industrial space. The BOMA International Expo also will feature dedicated spaces for these topics; conference-goers can walk the “green carpet” of the Green Pavilion for the latest energy-efficient and environmentally friendly products from leading industry providers and visit the Technology Pavilion for the latest high-tech offerings—everything from simple apps to cutting-edge solutions for creating the highest performing asset.

“Sustainability and smart building technology aren’t just niche trends anymore—they underpin the health and future of commercial real estate,” said BOMA International Chair Brian M. Harnetiaux, senior vice president of Asset Management at McCarthy Cook. “BOMA International’s annual conference is the best opportunity for property professionals to gain the knowledge they need to ensure they remain competitive in the industry.”

The 2017 BOMA International Annual Conference & Expo is commercial real estate’s most important event of the year. The program features 50 expert-led sessions across six education tracks on topics ranging from tenant retention strategies to operational best practices for office, industrial and mixed-use properties. More than 450 exhibits by leading manufacturers and suppliers at the BOMA International Expo will help attendees find the industry’s best solutions for creating and sustaining competitive, high-performance buildings. This year’s opening keynote address will feature highly decorated astronauts and retired U.S. Navy captains Mark and Scott Kelly sharing their perspectives on leadership, teamwork and innovation. Recent designees of the BOMA 360 Performance Program®  will be honored at the conference, and the event will culminate in The Outstanding Building of the Year® (TOBY®) Awards, the commercial real estate industry’s highest recognition honoring excellence in commercial building management and operations.
