Walkable Raleigh Neighborhood Named Community of the Year in National Design Competition

WASHINGTON – (RealEstateRama) — Oakdale at Mordecai, a neighborhood of new single-family homes in a revitalized area of Raleigh, N.C., was named the Community of the Year in the 2017 Best in American Living Awards (BALA) today by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

Nestled between two historic districts near downtown, Oakdale’s architecture was designed to fit the aesthetic of the surrounding area while also including popular modern features. Architect/designer Scott Gardner Architect, PLLC, and builder Robuck Homes Triangle LLC created eight different house plans that include large open kitchens, generous storage and rear garages. The community offers 30 exterior designs and many interior finishes.

Streetlights, sidewalks and welcoming streetscapes invite residents to head out on foot to enjoy the neighborhood and the city. It’s a short walk from Oakdale to the revitalized Person Street Business District, which USA Today called one of the country’s Top 10 “up and coming” neighborhoods in 2014.

“Oakdale feels like a community,” said Tom Kopf, NAHB 2017 judging chair and 2017 Best in American Living Awards subcommittee chair. “It looks like it’s been there forever, has lots of charm and makes you see yourself walking its sidewalks.”

In other words, Oakdale is the perfect fit for the BALA Community of the Year award. “Great design taps into the emotions that make a house a home. The BALA program celebrates the designers and builders as ‘the best of the best’,” he said.

In its 34th year, BALA recognizes outstanding achievement by builders and design professionals in all sectors of the residential housing industry including single-family production, custom, rental, affordable, interiors, remodeling, community and international. Award winners were announced at the annual NAHB International Builders’ Show in Orlando.
