LAKEWOOD, CO – October 10, 2014 – (RealEstateRama) — On October 6, 2014, Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) was recognized as “Legislator of the Year” for his significant contributions and support for affordable housing by the Colorado chapter of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO). Since being elected to Congress in 2006, Rep. Perlmutter has served on the House Financial Services Committee which has jurisdiction over many issues including housing programs such as Public Housing and all HUD programs.

“I’m honored to be recognized by NAHRO and many of their hardworking housing advocates,” said Rep. Perlmutter. “Stable housing represents so much more than just four walls and a roof. Affordable housing provides opportunities for working families in Colorado to maintain a job, provide for their family, and have a place they can call home.”

During his time in Congress, Rep. Perlmutter has worked to help secure a “Sustainable Community Initiative” grant worth $4.5 million for DRCOG to develop the Metro Denver region’s long-range plan for growth and development. Part of this plan is to ensure families have affordable housing along transportation lines such as the Westline and Northline.

“Congressman Perlmutter is a resilient advocate for critical funding of affordable housing, transit, sustainability and community development initiatives to create a better Colorado,” said Tami Fischer, executive director and CEO of Metro West Housing Solutions, and president of NAHRO’s Colorado chapter.

In addition, Rep. Perlmutter has supported other federal programs, including: Low-Income Housing Tax Credits; New Markets Tax Credits; Community Development Block Grants (CDBG); HOME Investment Partnership Funds; efforts to fund the Housing Trust Fund; and Self-Sufficiency Programs to help constituents succeed on their own. In light of the recent budget constraints, Congressman Perlmutter has also been pushing HUD to lighten up the regulatory requirements placed on housing authorities while still ensuring accountability.

The event also comes during Housing America Month. Housing America was created in 2007 and designated October as the annual month for NAHRO and its members to collectively raise awareness of the need and importance of safe, decent and affordable housing in quality communities.
