Sears Heroes at Home Raises More than $1.8 Million for Rebuilding Together, Totaling More Than $17 Million in Funding for Veteran’s Housing Rebuild Projects Over Five Years

WASHINGTON, D.C. – October 12, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — Rebuilding Together, a national nonprofit that believes in a safe and healthy home for every person, will receive $1.8 million from Sears Holdings Heroes at Home program to assist low-income military families with critical home repairs, improvements, and accessibility modifications.

$1.8 million was raised this past summer through customer donations at Sears stores and online via a link at sears.com/heroesathome. Over the past five years Sears has raised $17 million for Rebuilding Together via its Heroes at Home program and helped 1,287 families stay in their homes.

“This relationship has proved invaluable to Rebuilding Together,” said Gary Officer, President and CEO of Rebuilding Together. “The funds that Sears has raised have gone on to help improve the living conditions of so many military families. We look forward to seeing even more homes repaired with Sears help.”

Sears and Rebuilding Together’s efforts this summer included assisting 150 veteran families in need across the United States; veterans like Captain Pat Horan, who suffered a major head wound after being shot while serving in Baghdad five years ago. Sears Heroes at Home and Rebuilding Together installed an elevator into the Horan Home. Volunteers totally renovated their bathroom to make it wheelchair accessible. Handrails were also installed throughout the home to prevent falls. Doors were widened and the back porch was renovated to make the home even more accessible.

Sears and Rebuilding Together also worked together to help build a “House United” as part of the Craftsman House United program. The Craftsman brand along with DIY expert Ty Pennington, NextGen Home, Bank of America, and Champion Home Builders built a modular home for a deserving American vet. One half of the home was built with state delegates during the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida on Aug. 28, and the other half was built with state delegates during the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina on Sept. 4.
