First Phase of Punahou School Redevelopment Begins

Honolulu, HI – June 1, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — With the help of Nordic PCL Construction Inc., Punahou School’s master plan to develop a creative, adaptive, and collaborative school neighborhood is coming to fruition.

Phase 1A of the project, which broke ground in March, involves the construction of four two-story studios for grades 4–5. Together, these four studios will be home to 16 planned classrooms that will feature 447-square-foot lanais, moveable partitions to combine classrooms, and a shared breakout room. The classrooms are scheduled to open in time for the 2016–2017 school year.

Design development is already underway for Phase 1B. With this phase, the Julia Ing Learning Center will be transformed into a 20,000-square-foot Learning Commons for grades K–8. Currently a library and multimedia facility for grades K–4, the new facility will include technology and media labs as well as instructional and conference rooms, and studios for the music and performing-arts programs. The plan also accommodates consolidation of the music program, development of a global education neighborhood, and the repurposing of existing campus facilities. This phase also includes three more studios, adding another 12 classrooms to the Grades 2-5 Neighborhood. Beginning in 2014, the enormous, campus-wide overhaul is expected to be completed over the next decade.

“The development of more collaborative space will allow students to further advance their creativity and understanding and Nordic PCL is honored to be a part of that,” said Glen Kaneshige, president at Nordic PCL.

Founded in 1841, Punahou School is one of the oldest educational institutions in Hawaii. Not only is the school’s name inspired by the natural spring that runs through the heart of campus, but it has motivated construction of a campus with an emphasis on green space.
