Simon Perkowitz of KTGY Presents “How to Make Mixed Use Work” at ICSC CenterBuild Conference in Phoenix, AZ

IRVINE, CALIF. – December 01, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — National award-winning KTGY Architecture + Planning is pleased to announce that Simon Perkowitz, AIA, PE, a principal in the firm’s Retail Studio, has been invited to participate as a roundtable facilitator at the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) CenterBuild Conference held from December 1-4, 2015, at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa in Phoenix, AZ. Perkowitz will present “How to Make Mixed Use Work,” on Thursday, December 3, at 12:15 p.m., as part of the roundtable program. The CenterBuild Conference is the industry’s premier retail design and construction conference.

“There’s a lot more to developing mixed-use projects than meets the eye,” said Perkowitz. “Forward thinking is critical when planning mixed-use projects. Designers and developers need to consider how the space can and will be used. They also need to know how to blend the architectural aesthetic, signage and branding to respond to both the community’s and the developer’s vision. Tenants can come and go (and often do!) so the retail space needs to have design flexibility to accommodate the greatest number of possibilities now and into the future.”

According to Perkowitz, “Integrating the different uses in a mixed-use development is ‘part science and part art.’ Although retail needs to be recognized as a distinct element, it is important to make sure that the design is seamlessly integrated and encompasses the entire building’s uses. You don’t want the building to appear as two separately-designed buildings or components.”

Perkowitz states that the development team needs to define what the most pivotal conceptual considerations are at the very start of the design phase. Other initial considerations include evaluating any site constraints that might exist to avoid surprises.

Perkowitz has over 40 years of design experience in every facet of retail architecture — from master planning, entitlements, ground-up design of commercial projects, retail tenant buildings to vertical mixed-use developments and various repositioning projects. He is dedicated to creating vibrant places that enhance the community and achieve the goals of its stakeholders. Perkowitz’s comprehensive knowledge and industry-wide expertise has been invaluable to the successful planning and design of thousands of built projects. In addition to his work in the architectural profession, Perkowitz has served as a member of the City of Palos Verdes Estates California Planning Commission for 11 years having chaired the commission for six years. He also provides services to the legal community appearing as an expert witness to support litigation on design and construction related matters.
