Norton Public Meeting to Seek a Lasting Solution to Neighborhood Airplane Noise, May 5
WASHINGTON, D.C. – April 29, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) will host a community discussion on airplane noise affecting neighborhoods in the District of Columbia, including the Palisades, Foxhall, and Bellevue, on Tuesday, May 5, at the Palisades Recreation Center (5200 Sherier PL NW), from 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. The public meeting will feature officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA), who will also hear residents’ concerns and answer questions.
Norton, a member of the House Aviation Subcommittee, has actively pursued remedies to neighborhood airplane noise for years. At a hearing in March, Norton got FAA Administrator Michael Huerta to commit his agency to working with D.C. neighborhoods to address ongoing issues with airplane noise from flights departing Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Huerta told Norton that the FAA is working on a redesign of the airspace to ensure that planes follow the Potomac River rather than flying directly over the homes of D.C. residents. He added that the FAA is actively working with MWAA on implementation of this plan.
“I have been down this road before—or is it up in the air—with residents whose sleep is broken by airplane noise,” Norton said. “During one period, we thought we were getting somewhere, but the issue keeps returning. From my work on the House Aviation Subcommittee, I know this issue is fixable. This time we are insisting on a permanent solution.”
