This Mother’s Day, Reunite Mom with her Unclaimed Property

Loved ones could have lost or forgotten funds, find out at www.patreasury.gov

Harrisburg – May 6, 2014 – (RealEstateRama) — There are many gifts that would delight moms this Mother’s Day, but the gift of found money is one that can truly make a difference in the life of a loved one, State Treasurer Rob McCord noted today as he reminded families to remember Treasury’s unclaimed property program when considering ways to celebrate the special women in their lives.

“It only takes a moment to search a name of a loved one in our free online database at www.patreasury.gov, and with the average claim amount valued at $1,200, it could be well worth the time to search,” Treasurer McCord said. “Imagine how pleased your mother would be to hear she is among the one-in-10 Pennsylvanians who have lost or forgotten money waiting for them at Treasury? Our Return Team stands ready to help you reunite your loved ones with their unclaimed property.”

Each year, Treasury receives millions of dollars in unclaimed property – things such as abandoned bank accounts, forgotten stocks, uncashed checks, and contents of safe deposit boxes. Treasury’s Return Team is currently seeking the owners of $2.2 billion in unclaimed property.

Treasurer McCord said people and organizations owed unclaimed property often do not realize the property has become dormant because holders are not required under state law to contact the owner before remitting it to Treasury. Checks often get mailed to old or incorrect addresses or the funds never make it to the intended recipient for a variety of reasons, the Treasurer noted. Furthermore, the holder of the property may turn over the property to Treasury with misspelled or incomplete owner information. Treasury’s Return Team is available toll-free at 1-800-222-2046, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., to help conduct a thorough search.

Since January 2009, the McCord Treasury has collected more than $1.1 billion in property, returned more than $543 million to rightful owners, and generated about $638 million for the state’s General Fund through the Unclaimed Property Program.
