Norton Reelected as Top Democrat on Highways and Transit Subcommittee

Gets Three Other Subcommittees Critical for D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – (RealEstateRama) — Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) was elected by her fellow Democrats on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to return as the Ranking Member of its Subcommittee on Highways and Transit. As Ranking Member last Congress, Norton was one of the “Big Four” House Transportation Committee leaders who negotiated the first long-term surface transportation bill in a decade, and successfully ensured that key Democratic priorities made it into the final, bipartisan bill. The subcommittee’s jurisdiction over transit programs, including the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) rail and bus systems, is of particular importance to Norton and her constituents in the District of Columbia and the national capital region.

In addition, Norton will serve on three other subcommittees that she sought because of their strong effects on the District—Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management; Aviation; and Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation. Norton’s work on the Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management Subcommittee, which she chaired during the 110th and 111th Congresses, has transformed and developed entire neighborhoods within the District, including NoMa and the Southeast and Southwest Waterfronts, generating millions of dollars in revenue for the federal and District governments. Norton’s work on that subcommittee is particularly important because of the large number of federal properties and land in the District, as well as federal agencies housed in leased space in privately owned buildings.

Norton will use her role on the Aviation Subcommittee to continue her efforts to combat airplane noise, which has dramatically increased in neighborhoods across the District. The newly-constructed U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters, which Norton secured funding for, is located in D.C. in the Department of Homeland Security consolidated headquarters on the St. Elizabeth campus.
