Determining Homeless Status of Youth for HUD Programs

-

WASHINGTON, D.C. – November 13, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) released guidance to assist intake workers in determining and documenting homeless status for youth using the definition of homelessness found in HUD’s Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) and Continuum of Care (CoC) Programs to ensure youth are not being turned away from the housing and services they need in error.

HUD-funded programs are an essential component of a coordinated and comprehensive community response to ending youth homelessness. As outlined in the vision for a coordinated and comprehensive community response from the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH), HUD’s homeless assistance resources should be a part of the array of services and housing options for youth. HUD’s guidance supports the recently launched one-stop spot for youth and those that serve youth experiencing homelessness through HUD programs, to find housing with connections to resources, publications, and relevant links to other agencies and organizations.

The U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness hosted a webinar on October 28, 2015 for an overview of the guidance.
