HUD APPROVES AGREEMENT BETWEEN AFRICAN-AMERICAN COUPLE AND FARMERS INSURANCE RESOLVING DISCRIMINATION CLAIMS

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced today it is approving an agreement between an African-American couple in Los Angeles and three home insurance companies in California. The Conciliation Agreement resolves allegations the insurers discriminated against the family based on their race and where they lived.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced a graduate student team from Rutgers University as the winners of HUD’s fourth annual Innovation in Affordable Housing Student Design and Planning Competition. The Rutgers team was one of four finalists to introduce a comprehensive plan for redeveloping a property owned by the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. HUD also announced a team from the University of Michigan as runner-up.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today announced an agreement with a group of California mortgage lenders to resolve allegations they discriminated against a mortgage applicant based on his national origin. The complainant alleged that American Financial Network of Brea, California; Benchmark Communities of Fresno; Brigantino Enterprise of Hollister; and an employee of Benchmark Communities failed to prequalify him to purchase a home in Hollister because he is Hispanic.

Sales of new single-family houses in December 2016 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 536,000, according to estimates released jointly today by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau. This is 10.4 percent (±12.2%)* below the revised November rate of 598,000 and is 0.4 percent (±11.7%)* below the December 2015 estimate of 538,000

HUD ANNOUNCES $10 MILLION IN “SWEAT EQUITY” GRANTS

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Julián Castro today awarded $10 million in “sweat equity” grants to four non-profit self-help housing organizations through HUD’s Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP). This funding will create at least 539 affordable homes and significantly lower their purchase price for low-income buyers, who will contribute their own labor toward the construction or rehabilitation of these units.
