HUD Secretary Turner to Co-Chair New Task Force on Manufactured Housing Innovation

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) said Secretary Scott Turner will co-chair the Task Force on Manufactured Housing Innovation, following an Executive Order signed by President Donald Trump. According to HUD, the order, titled Decreasing Housing Costs for the American People, established the task force to take a whole-of-government approach to modernizing federal housing programs to accommodate innovations in manufactured housing.

HUD said the task force will work to modernize standards and codes to safely speed up certifications and approvals across government. It will also provide an alternative pathway and clear regulatory guidance while ensuring quality housing supply.

The task force will be co-chaired by the HUD Secretary and the Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Its members include the Secretary of Agriculture, the Secretary of Commerce and the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

Turner said home building has been hampered for decades by regulatory red tape and that the task force can usher in the next generation of housing by modernizing standards and speeding up approvals across government.

Why it matters

The task force could lead to changes in standards, codes and approval processes that affect manufactured housing builders, lenders and buyers. HUD has not announced specific rule changes or timelines.
