Rebuilding Together AmeriCorps celebrates the Martin Luther King, Jr. Week Day of Service

WASHINGTON, D.C. – January 10, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — Members of Rebuilding Together’s AmeriCorps program, CapacityCorps, will dedicate the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service to rebuilding homes and revitalizing communities in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

In honor of the Martin Luther King Day of Service, 65 AmeriCorps members serving with Rebuilding Together will come together from 20 different states to perform critical home repair services for veteran and senior citizen homeowners in-need. More than just one day, these members will provide a full week of service to the Carverdale-Edwards-South Creston Hills (The C-E-C triangle) area in Oklahoma City.

The event is being hosted by Rebuilding Together Oklahoma City (OKC), an organization that works year round to deliver free home repair services to local families in need of assistance. For over 21 years, Rebuilding Together OKC, with the assistance of their 50,000 volunteers, has repaired over 2,100 homes, 29 community centers, and eight public school buildings, investing over $20 million in services to the community.

Rebuilding Together AmeriCorps members, serving a collective 3,000 hours, will repair nine homes with the help of area high school students and members from the C-E-C triangle community. Madeline Whitehorn is a Rebuilding Together AmeriCorps Member serving with Rebuilding Together OKC and a lifelong resident of Oklahoma. “I am passionate about preserving our great past as well as preparing for a greater future. The spirit of our people is reflected in their resiliency during hard times,” said Whitehorn, as she prepared to welcome the entire Rebuilding Together AmeriCorps program to her community for a week of service.

Rebuilding Together CapacityCorps is a National*Direct AmeriCorps program with 65 full-time members serving at 35 local affiliates in 20 states. Rebuilding Together AmeriCorps members build the capacity of grassroots Rebuilding Together programs so that they become sustainable, effective and efficient in helping additional low-income homeowners in need. As developing housing preservation leaders, these AmeriCorps members serve essential roles in building the capacity of their host sites in areas such as recruiting and managing volunteers, performing direct home repairs, building community partnerships, and creating new programs.
