Biden-Harris Administration Announces $28 Million to Boost Energy Efficiency and Sustainability at Federal Buildings Nationwide
WASHINGTON, D.C. – RealEstateRama – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) announced the selection of 19 federal projects to receive over $28 million in funding under the Assisting Federal Facilities with Energy Conservation Technologies (AFFECT) grant program. These projects are expected to create annual energy cost savings of $22.7 million and avoid more than 82,600 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions while leveraging $837 million in private financing via energy savings performance contracts.
The Biden-Harris Administration is leading by example to tackle the climate crisis through President Biden’s Federal Sustainability Plan, which establishes an ambitious path to achieve net-zero emissions from federal buildings by 2045.
“The projects selected for the AFFECT grants will play a vital role in reducing the federal government’s energy costs and minimizing its environmental impact,” said FEMP Director Mary Sotos. “Through these initiatives, we strive to achieve significant energy savings, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and establish the federal government as a leader in sustainability.”
The AFFECT grants will finance a wide range of projects in federal facilities, encompassing energy-efficiency measures, carbon pollution-free electricity, energy load management strategies, and climate resilience enhancements. By implementing these projects, federal agencies are fulfilling their missions more effectively and generating substantial economic benefits by attracting private investment, creating good paying jobs in clean energy, and promoting the adoption of American-made technologies.
“President Biden’s Federal Sustainability Plan is creating good jobs and saving taxpayer dollars through energy efficiency,” said White House Council on Environmental Quality Federal Chief Sustainability Officer Andrew Mayock. “Upgrading our federal buildings to be more efficient and sustainable means healthier communities.”
