ATLANTA (July 19, 2023) — Habitat for Humanity International recently received an $8.05 million grant to support 362 AmeriCorps member positions, marking the largest service member grant the global housing nonprofit has received in the past 11 years. The increased funding is part of AmeriCorps’ $440 million investment to better support national service and volunteerism.

“AmeriCorps service members play a vital role in Habitat’s mission of building decent, stable, affordable housing,” said Adrienne Goolsby, senior vice president of U.S. and Canada Habitat for Humanity International. “Their engagement allows us to serve more families in communities across the country.”

This year, more than 150 AmeriCorps service members convened in Killeen, Texas, for a weeklong blitz build in partnership with Fort Hood Area Habitat for Humanity.

“We see national service as an integral part of doing your job as a citizen and making sure that you’re helping [Americans] to live up to our ideals by going to work for your country,” Michael Smith, AmeriCorps CEO, said during the event.

AmeriCorps brings people together to tackle the country’s most pressing challenges through national service and volunteering. Since the agency’s inception in 1994, more than 1 million AmeriCorps service members have helped national and local nonprofits, educational institutions and faith-based groups serve communities across the country.

Interested individuals can apply for and serve full-time or part-time for up to a year at a local Habitat affiliate within the U.S. Accepted applicants receive a modest living allowance, health care benefits and a post-service award that can be used to cover education expenses.

During the 2023-2024 service year, Habitat AmeriCorps members are expected to contribute approximately 596,200 hours toward building and repairing homes alongside homeowners in more than 100 communities across the U.S., among other activities.
