ATLANTA, Ga. Oct. 3, 2016 – (RealEstateRama) — JLL has been selected by the University System of Georgia to provide project management services for the construction of a new Convocation Center at the University of North Georgia’s Dahlonega Campus. “The University of North Georgia and JLL have partnered successfully on multiple transformational projects during the last decade, said Frank ‘Mac’ McConnell, Senior VP for Business and Finance at UNG, “and we consider JLL one of the very best firms in the industry. JLL Atlanta’s Project and Development Services (PDS) is overseeing the project. PDS currently is working on several campuses in the University of System of Georgia (USG).

When it opens in 2018, the Convocation Center will replace the smaller Memorial Hall as the University’s primary event center. The new facility will be located in the southwest zone of the Dahlonega Campus, just off Morrison Moore Parkway.

Totalling 103,000 square feet, the three-story structure will provide critical expansion space to meet the needs of the University’s growing student population, which has an enrollment of more than 17,000 students across five campuses. The Convocation Center will feature a 3,600-seat arena to be used for convocations and other University events, including athletics and assemblies to support the school’s academic courses, student activities, military training and 800-member Corps of Cadets. UNG is one of only six senior military colleges in the U.S. A groundbreaking was held for the Convocation Center in June, after the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia approved plans for the project. The Georgia legislature approved $29.3 million in construction funding for the Convocation Center this year.

The building will also house academic space to support the University’s Health and Physical Education program, including four classrooms totalling approximately 200 new seats, three new clinic laboratory spaces and a faculty suite with 16 offices. A large, 1,800 square-foot divisible multi-purpose room will be used for formal University events.

In addition, portions of Memorial Hall—originally built in 1960 and currently used for the University’s convocation, athletic, and military science events—will be renovated. The work in that facility will encompass the renovation of approximately 8,410 square feet of classroom space, including four classrooms and an informal learning breakout space for collaborative group study.

The project is being designed by Lord Aeck Sargent in collaboration with Rossetti; the construction manager is Juneau Construction Co.
