WASHINGTON – September 9, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The Urban Land Institute (ULI), a research and education organization dedicated to providing leadership in the responsible use of land and in creating thriving communities worldwide, has announced the formation of the ULI Virginia district council.

Recently, the ULI Richmond and Hampton Roads district councils decided to collaborate on the creation of ULI Virginia in order to broaden the opportunity for the entire Commonwealth to take advantage of ULI’s global network and educational programming.

“One of our top strategic goals is to expand programming and educational opportunities throughout the Commonwealth. By combining the two district councils and hiring a full time manager, we are taking the first steps in that process to ensure our members have access to the exciting new initiatives we have started developing together,” Muriel Rodriguez, vice president, Schnabel Engineering and ULI Virginia Chair.

Building on the successes of the Richmond and Hampton Roads District councils, the ULI Virginia district council launches with over 400 members and a robust 2015-2016 schedule of events and community initiatives. Both Richmond and Hampton Roads have recently completed Regional Reality Check programs, initiatives that bring together 300 community leaders and citizens for a full day workshop that addresses future growth by examining housing, employment, and transportation land use. Both exercises have informed the planning districts of the community’s priorities and have resulted in further actions.

The work of the two district councils provide valuable services to our communities in the form of Technical Assistance Panels (TAP) and community based educational efforts in the effective use of land which have been key deliverables. Chesterfield County, Ettrick’s community revitalization around VSU, City of Norfolk Military Circle revitalization, and Trans Oriented Development (TOD) Virginia Beach are recent examples. ULI Virginia is also launching important new Public Officials Education and Outreach and Regional Product Council initiatives and plans to expand into the Charlottesville area.
