DHCD to Hold Information Sessions on Upcoming Rental Competitions
The Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) will be holding multiple rental funding competitions during the next six to seven months. As described on DHCD's website (link is external), it intends to host a mini-competition for highly-ready family production projects in October 2017. In addition, DHCD is almost ready to release a NOFA for Housing Trust Fund (HTF) supportive housing projects, with full applications likely due in November 2017.

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today filed amendments to strike all four anti-home-rule riders from the House’s fiscal year 2018 District of Columbia Appropriations bill, which is expected to be considered on the floor next month when Congress returns from recess. Norton’s amendments would strike the riders that prohibit D.C. from spending its local funds on marijuana commercialization and on abortions for low-income women, as well as those that repeal D.C.’s medical aid-in-dying law, the Death with Dignity Act, and budget autonomy referendum.

Mayor Bowser and the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) announced Victory Housing with Brinshore Development as the developer selected to redevelop the historic Hebrew Home at 1125 Spring Road, NW in Ward 4. The project will produce 187 residential units, with 80 percent of the units created as affordable housing for seniors and families.

EPA awards $1.1 million to Idaho to protect drinking water sources
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced it awarded a total of $1.1 million in two-year grant funding for 2016-2018 to the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality to protect underground sources of drinking water from leaking underground petroleum storage tanks.
Single-family Starts Hold Steady in July After Upward June Revision
Nationwide housing starts fell 4.8 percent in July to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.16 million units, according to newly released data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Commerce Department. Single-family production slipped 0.5 percent in July to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 856,000 after a strong, upwardly revised June reading. Year-to-date, single-family starts are 8.6 percent above their level over the same period last year. Multifamily starts dropped 15.3 percent to 299,000 units.

A construction company was sentenced today to a fine of $1.5 million dollars and three years of probation for violating the federal Clean Air Act, announced the Justice Department. AIREKO Construction Company failed to comply with the asbestos National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants during the illegal removal of asbestos containing materials from the Minillas North Tower in May 2012, according to court documents.
