HUD AWARDS CHOICE NEIGHBORHOOD GRANTS TO 10 CITIES
U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Julián Castro today awarded $8 million to 10 severely distressed neighborhoods to stimulate affordable housing and economic development. Funded through HUD’s Choice Neighborhoods Initiative, these awards will help local leaders to craft comprehensive, homegrown plans to revitalize and transform these neighborhoods.
HUD AWARDS $42 MILLION IN HOUSING COUNSELING GRANTS
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today awarded more than $42 million in housing counseling grants to hundreds of national, regional and local organizations to help families and individuals with their housing needs and to prevent future foreclosures. HUD’s housing counseling grants and the additional funding they leverage will assist more than 1.4 million households find housing, make more informed housing choices, or keep their current homes. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced that it is making $2 million available to support research to develop and improve methods for the identification and control of key residential health hazards. Key hazards include issues such as pest infestation, poor indoor air quality, injury prevention, mold and excess moisture, and lead in drinking water. It is especially important to protect vulnerable populations, such as children, seniors, and people with chronic illnesses such as asthma, from exposure to these hazards

HUD ANNOUNCES $9.9 MILLION IN “SWEAT EQUITY” GRANTS
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development today awarded $9.9 million in “sweat equity” grants to produce at least 541 affordable homes for low-income individuals and families. Funded through HUD’s Self-Help Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP), the funding awarded today, along with the labor contributed by these households, will significantly lower the cost of homeownership.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced today the award of $784,421 in Specially Adapted Housing Assistive Technology (SAHAT) Grants to eligible individuals, researchers, and organizations to develop new technologies that would enhance Veterans and Servicemembers’ ability to live in specially adapted homes.
The SAHAT Grant Program was authorized by Congress to design assistive technologies to expand home modification options for Veterans who apply for VA’s Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) benefit. Grants of up to $200,000 have been issued to four selected grantees.
