The District of Columbia Housing Finance Agency (DCHFA) is investing in affordable housing in Columbia Heights for the second time this spring with the issuance of $15,840,000 in bond financing for the rehabilitation and construction of the Maycroft Apartments (1474 Columbia Road N.W.

Forty-two states added construction jobs between May 2016 and May 2017 amid growing demand for construction services, while 25 states and the District of Columbia lost construction jobs between April and May as firms struggle to find enough workers, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of Labor Department data released today. Association officials said workforce shortages appear to be impacting construction employment in parts of the country.

Led by a decline in multifamily production, nationwide housing starts fell 5.5 percent in May to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.09 million units, according to newly released data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Commerce Department. Multifamily starts fell 9.7 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 289,000 units while single-family production edged down 3.9 percent to 794,000.

The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) Builder Application Survey (BAS) data for May 2017 shows mortgage applications for new home purchases increased 15 percent compared to May 2016. Compared to April 2017, applications increased by 4 percent relative to the previous month. This change does not include any adjustment for typical seasonal patterns

Total commercial/multifamily debt outstanding rose to $3.01 trillion at the end of the first quarter of 2017, the first time it has broken the $3 trillion mark.  Multifamily mortgage debt outstanding rose to $1.17 trillion, an increase of $23.4 billion, or 2.0 percent, from the fourth of quarter of 2016.
